Psychotropic Drug Use in Assisted Living

The five tabs below will contain all the information you need to take this inservice. Virtually any question you might have can be found here. If you are not already familiar with the procedures, please take time to read through these tabs.

(By the way, the About this inservice, Verification process, and the Terms of Service tabs are virtually identical among all our courses. The Inservice PDF and the Test and Verification form tabs will contain different info depending on the course.)

Click on the tabs below to open or close them.

IMPORTANT!!

The three fields for each inservice test MUST be completed properly! You will be asked to fill in three areas:

1) Name (Student's first and last name)

2) Verifier (First and last name of responsible person who can vouch that you took the inservice)

3) Facility (This MUST be the abbreviation or full name of your facility, NOT a number. Save yourself a little time and just put in the abbreviation. Or, if you prefer, write out the full name of the home. I need to know where to send the certificates.)

A student will not receive credit for any inservice if any of those three areas are not completed. Bottom line is, I must know who took the test, who is responsible to make sure student took the test, and the facility the student works for. Many tests are rejected simply because students do not read or follow these instructions, which also appear in various tabs with each inservice.

Students will also not receive credit for any inservice that puts the total CEUs more than 8 CEUs for the day. The state will not allow more than 8 CEUs in any given day, so if you submit more than 8 CEUs worth, all those that push your daily limit over 8 will be rejected.

Thanks!

About this inservice

Psychotropic Drug Use in Assisted Living offers 2 official CEUs credit. Although this is not a mandatory inservice in North Carolina, it is a powerful addition to any medication administration course or program. The topics covered in this inservice will build on your medication knowledge base and give you a perspective that few in the world of assisted living possess.

Students who successfully complete the inservice and test, and submit it along with the Verification form, will receive the appropriate number of CEUs as indicated.

First things

I encourage you to read through all the instructions, processes, and agreements on this page. The whole process is pretty simple, once you know the steps. Basically, the student will:

     1.  Read the inservice
     2.  Take the test online
     3.  Submit the test with Verification form back to us

Please take a few moments and become familiar with the contents of the “Verification process” and the “Terms of Service” tabs before taking the inservice or submitting any data to us.

Taking the inservice

Within the tab on this page conveniently called “Inservice PDF” you will find a complete PDF copy of the inservice or course. We have tried to make it easy for you to view this inservice on any device with options to download and print it as well.

The student can either read the inservice online, or you can download and make a copy of it and pass them out to your students as needed. That way, more than one student can take the course at one time.

The test, however, MUST be taken online, one student at a time, as it will be submitted to us electronically. The test can be found in the “Test and Verification form” tab on this page. Once completed, the test along with the Verification form (which is part of the test page) will be submitted to us.

Once we receive the test (assuming a passing grade) and Verification form, a hard copy of the certificate with the official credit hours will be sent to the facility for your records.

We maintain secure, electronic, online backup files of all inservice and training program certificates done through our website. In addition, we also keep secured electronic copies on another, third party server for redundancy backups.

Verification process

Moffitt Healthcare offers inservices for official CEU credit from the appropriate regulating agency. We attempt to verify that participants in our inservices (1) truthfully represent themselves, and (2) put forth the required number of hours for the inservice being studied, through completion of a simple form.

In order to obtain CEU credit, we must receive two things:

1.    The inservice test if required (the inservice will state on the first page whether a test is expected or not)
2.    The completed Verification Form (found on each test if required, or stand-alone form if test is not required)

The "Verified by" line MUST have FIRST AND LAST NAME of the verifier! The verifier name cannot be the same name as the student.

The test is automatically graded and both the test and the Verification information are submitted to us when the student completes the test and hits the "Send" button. The student can also immediately see her/his grade and retake the test if necessary.

The student must pass the test AND submit the Verification information in order to obtain inservice CEUs.

Why have this “verification” process?

Normally, a student takes an inservice in a class setting in your facility with an instructor present. The instructor can “prove” who took (or did not take) the inservice, since the instructor was present. However, taking an inservice online does not allow me to see the student face-to-face. I have no way to “prove” or “verify” who took the inservice.

To “verify” a student simply means that someone affirms that the student did, indeed, take his or her own inservice and test as appropriate. It is similar to requiring two persons to do a narcotics count on a med cart. There is far less chance for error or fraud if two people are involved in the process. For these reasons, verification is a state requirement.

Who can verify the student?

Anyone can verify the student, usually someone of authority in the administrative or nursing staff. This could be the lead nurse, administrator, or anyone else given the authority to do this. And, there can be more than one "verifier" in any facility. If the usual “verifier” also takes an inservice, then that person must also be “verified” by someone else for that inservice. In other words, no students can ever verify themselves!

There must always be two different people on any Verification Form: the student who took the course and the one who verifies that the student took the course.

How is verification done?

On the test page you will find the test and the Verification Form will be at the bottom. The Verification Form consists of only 3 form fields:

1.  Student name
2.  Verified by
3.  Facility code

The facility code is the code unique to your facility and is written on the cover letter sent each month with the LHPS notes. The student (unless authorized) should not have access to the facility code. Again, all fields must be completed.

PLEASE NOTE: We retain all submitted tests/Verification Forms for our records, in case there is any question as to whether or not the student did take his/her own inservice as required.

Once we have received the test (if required) and the Verification Form, we will send a hard copy of the course certificate by mail and retain an electronic copy of it for our records.

Terms of Service

Moffitt Healthcare provides online inservices and training programs for which it has state approval as appropriate. In addition, we may offer other programs or training which are not sanctioned by any agency or authority, but are meant solely for educational or personal enrichment benefit. The "About this inservice" tab on this page will state whether this offering is for official CEUs or credit.

Moffitt Healthcare attests that any inservice or program advertised as approved for official CEUs or credit has full authority and permission by the appropriate agency from the state of North Carolina to offer such classes and training online for the stated credit.

Qualifying students

These online inservices and training programs are offered completely free of charge and for unlimited students so as long as ALL of the following criteria are met:

  1. The specific community (facility) retains our LHPS services as a current service.
  2. Students are employees of the specific community that uses our LHPS service.
  3. Students who are employees of a community that does not subscribe to our LHPS service are not eligible for free online classes at that community, but if that student is also employed at another facility that does use our LHPS service, then that student is eligible to take the free inservices for the facility that does use our LHPS service.
  4. When a community first enlists our LHPS service, a period of 6 months shall pass before the community is allowed full and free access to our online classes and training programs.
  5. Communities that already enlist our LHPS service (and are current as of March 13, 2017) qualify for immediate access to the classes listed in the next section below.
  6. In the event that a facility cancels our LHPS service, then rehires us within 30 days of the cancellation, full and free access is granted immediately after rehiring us. If more than 30 days have lapsed since canceling our service, then the facility must have retained our service for at least 6 months before being granted access again.
  7. Under no circumstance will a student be awarded more than eight (8) CEUs per day. This is in keeping with state guidelines and best practices. It is difficult to take the inservices in full as presented when too many CEUs are attempted. The facility will be notified of any student who takes too many inservices in one day and the student will have to successfully retake the inservice to receive CEU credit.

Notice of proper use

  1. No employee of one community is permitted to access the web page of another community, nor is it allowed to share usernames, facility codes, or passwords with others in another community or with those who have no reason to possess those details, except for managers, owners, regional leaders, and others in a position of authority as needed.
  2. If a community cancels our LHPS service, the right to access any free training class or inservice, electronic files of LHPS notes or certificates, LHPS schedules, or any other stored electronic files, or any other portion of their membership privilege, is immediately forfeited. Our LHPS service includes free membership to our online courses and files and only communities with current LHPS service with Moffitt Healthcare will have access to these online areas.
  3. The full and free offerings that are available on the website for qualifying communities are free only online. Moffitt Healthcare performs many onsite classes each year. “Onsite” refers to classes done in the facility itself, live and in-person. It should be obvious that it would be impossible for us to provide free, onsite inservices, consulting, and training to all communities each time the community requested it. We are very happy to offer these high-value programs online for free. But classes, consulting, and programs that are done in-house cannot be offered for free and are assessed at our regular fee rate.
  4. Moffitt Healthcare offers for-pay inservices, training, and other programs through this website for facilities who do not wish to use our LHPS service. But for any specific facility (community) that retains our LHPS service, the inservices we currently offer as part of this TOS, free and without student limit, are as follows:
  •  Medication Administration – 6 CEUs
  •  Caring for the Resident with Dementia – 6 CEUs
  •  Psychotropic Drug Use in Assisted Living – 2 CEUs
  •  Infection Control – 3 CEUs
  •  Diabetes Management – 2 CEUs

There are some programs that, because of their nature, cannot be offered online. Such classes generally require personal instruction, observation of skills demonstrations, and direct supervision of administration of medications to residents. Examples of classes that require live, onsite instruction (and cannot be done online by any instructor) include:

  • LHPS skills check off
  • Medication Administration skills check off
  • Medication Administration 5-10-15 hour Training Program (Moffitt Healthcare is available for these onsite classes. But of course, the community is free to choose whomever it wishes for any onsite instruction or service.)

Each community retaining our LHPS service will be given a facility code that can be used to submit any completed test and Verification form.

Moffitt Healthcare reserves the right to make changes, including additions, deletions, or other augmentations, to any and all online offerings at any time without notice and as needed in order to be in compliance with state rules and regulations.

Submission of any inservice or training program test and Verification form assumes understanding and acceptance of this Terms of Service by the facility.

You can even  toggle to a full screen view (and back to normal screen) if you want. There is a little scroll bar on the right side of the viewer window so you can scroll up and down through the inservice.

If the inservice does not show up well in this viewer or if you just want to open it in a new tab, click on this sentence to open the inservice PDF file in a new tab.
